All members must receive pre-authorisation (Guarantee of Payment) prior to undergoing certain non-emergency procedures/treatments listed below:
- All Inpatient admissions and/or day-case treatments
- Any Surgeries requiring general anaesthesia (outpatient or inpatient)
- All Cancer treatments / therapies including radiotherapy
- Advanced imaging such as MRI, CT scan or PET
For non-emergency cases (scheduled treatments), the member should contact BUPA immediately after a treatment or procedure has been prescribed by the doctor. Pre-authorisation (Guarantee of Payment) can be requested as early as 30 days in advance and preferably no later than 5 working days before scheduled procedure takes place.
When requesting for pre-authorisation (Guarantee of Payment), the member would need to provide the below information:
- Pre-authorisation form completed and signed by treating doctor
- Scheduled treatment date
- Diagnosis and all relevant medical reports
- Name and all possible contact details of the medical facility
- Outline of treatment/procedure with itemised breakdown of cost
Pre-authorisation (Guarantee of Payment) ensures that prior to hospitalisation, the member is assured that he/she is covered and the treatment/procedure or surgery is eligible under the policy and would be paid by BUPA.
Once the treatment is authorised, BUPA will issue a GOP (Guarantee of Payment) directly to the hospital enabling the member to receive the treatment with no out of pocket expense.
Pre-authorisation (Guarantee of Payment) is not required for emergency situations, but the member should notify BUPA within 48 hours from hospital admittance.
